On one side of the planet, an undersea earthquake triggered a massive tsunami. Beofe the wave swept away the people on the shore, they had several seconds to murmur a prayer for their lives and those of their loved ones.

On the other side of the planet, the captain of a football team gave credit to prayer for the victory of his team.

Whose prayers were answered?

None of the above. Prayer is a lack of faith in God. It is the idea that God does not already know what is best for us and needs us to wise him up.

Neither one. Prayers are not "answered". There has never been any proof or verification of any kind that prayers are answered.

Prayers are little more than a psychological device used to center or calm oneself. They have NO effect on anything in this world beyond the person making the prayer.

The reason why people think prayers are effective is that they confuse an occassional positive outcome after a prayer as "proof" that the prayer was effective. People generally are ignorant of what a scientific test or verification is and don't really understand that they have only witnessed an anecdotal event, which is no proof at all.

Those who insist that prayers are effective are not being honest and are misleading others. They should not be in positions of religious leadership if they cannot be honest.

Prayer...I've been thinking about the structure of prayer lately. What it looks like in that mysterious place we send our heart's desires. I will share with you what I think it looks like and then what I think prayer does...

I think we are all contected by a spiritual energy that is composed of Love. Imagine tiny golden strands from one person to the next forming an intricate matrix of Love connection in all dimensions, including all persons who have lived in the past and maybe even those we imagine into existance in the future. Imagine that urgings of the heart somehow translate into Love energy that can move along these strands to comunicate to another person who Loves in a way that he can understand in his own heart. This is the invisible structure that I think holds us all together.

Now prayer...If these connections are intricately connecting all of us in some way...what if there were a system for sending Love energy along these pathways in such a way that the person or persons who needed to get the message could be contacted, even if the sender didn't necesarily understand the route that would be taken (or whether the routing was facillitated by "God" or not)? But what if, by being specific and deeply heartfelt (ie. sending intense Love energy) the pathway was discerned and recipients of the message contacted? Might not Loving people who could (and were willing to ) assist, understand what Love was beaconing them to do?

If a prayer were sent with much Love energy to save loved ones...I would imagine that recipients who posess much Love and are willing to share it, would spring into action to do whatever they could.

How much Love energy do you think a football captain is expending in sending his prayer for victory? And how many Lovers are out there listening for pleas for help in winning a game?

I don't know if this holds water...it's a recent idea and I offer it with an invitation to think about it and see what wisdom comes to you about this.

Prayer always seems to work best after the event.
