Because it's the law. It's the law because without teenagers buying alcohol, it's just that much fewer drunks on the road.

Maybe we should switch the laws and make everyone happy. If you can join the military at age 18 and possibly die for your country, then at 16 you are legal to drink but you'd have to wait till you are 21 to drive. That would solve both problems. Let's see that one before the US Congress? The legal drinking was 18 when I turned of age in 1981. The law changed to 19 to keep it out of the schools, then to changed again to 21 or states would loose Federal money to repair roads. Since 1981 the roads are still bumpy. What was that Fedral money for again Mr. President Regan?

Because in the 1970's, the USA lowered the drinking age to 19, and drinking and driving accidents went up over 1000%. 21 teaches a age of personal responsibility. You can't have a 18 year old fresh off to college being able to purchase booze freely. Think of the long term consequences.

Because those who are younger than 21 are irresponsibe.

However, where there is not legal drinking age, there are MANY less incidents of youth deaths due to alcohol.

America's youth wants what they can't have, and abuse it when they get (although that's not true for everyone).

Also, the earlier you start drinking, the more likely to become addicted you will be.

And this is coming from a 19 year old.

you must be in USA it is 18 in UK.

I believe it is set as 21 as a throwback from prohibition, it was repealed . 21 was the age of majority in most western countires way back. However USA ept this re alacahol as there is still a strong anti alcahol movment there, and they bleive that people not mature enough until then, just look at any USA college Campus or Spring break!!!

Do you want the long answer or the short one?

Short: Because it's the law.

Long: Because of a long standing puritan influence on the coutry coupled with the lobbiests backed by the treasury department in the 1920's and the resultant prohabition.

Yes it is 19 in Canada. So if you live near the border, go give your Candian friends a visit. But stay over there if you planned on getting trashed cuz you will get caught getting back over the border.

this is a good question..... i think it is really stupid that you can die for this country in war but you can't drink. i don't think anyone is any more mature at 21 than at 18. you can thank president ronnie reagan for that one. he said to all the states to change drinking age to 21 or the states won't get the money for their highways. sneaky huh? i remember that one i was in my mid teens when he did that one. it was in the mid 80's and no one has bothered to change the law by now.
