gesso is cheap acrilic paint so just wash the canvas with acrylic paint of any color you desire and there you go. Remember acrylic paint does not harm the canvas so you don't reallly need anything to prime it or protect it from acrylic paint. oil paint is where you need gesso or other protection because the oil in paint will deteriorate the canvas.
good luck.

Traditional gesso has a very fine grit in it which provides a "tooth" onto which the paint will adhere. Regular acrylic or latex paint used on its own doesn't provide this tooth, and subsequent layers of paint will peel off over time. Generally this grit is Titanium Oxide powder, which you could probably find at an art supplies dealer, or perhaps a Lapidary supplier (it's used to polish rocks). You'd have to experiment with ratios... but what to mix it with? House paint?

Jackson Pollock used house paint. Every night, the museum custodians sweep up more of his paintings off the floor, because it's all falling off. House paint isn't formulated to last for 100 years, but artist's materials are.

If you think your art is worth selling, then it's worth investing in good materials. You owe that much to your customers. Gesso is still cheaper than paint, and your painting is only as good as the ground it's painted on when it comes to longevity.

Gesso is lovely, but you are right - it is too expensive these days.

I use household emulsion paint (water-based) mixed with PVA glue in a 70/30ish mix. It feels a bit sloppier than Gesso when you paint it on, but has the same effect when it is dry. All you have to do is build up the layers until it is exactly what you want.

Hope this helps.

Yes there are other means to gesso your canvas than the commercial gesso. Any flat wall paint can be used to prime your canvas before painting with acrylic or oil paints. You can use as many coats as desired and you can tint it with a little acrylic paints if you want.
