My Dobermann smiles. Looks like she's growling but without the sound. Lips come right back to expose all her lovely teeth (but she's not being aggressive). I've been told dogs do it to show submission. Is this true?

Dog to dog its a submissive gesture, our dogs learn that we don;t expect the full submissive roll over on to their backs. Instead we respond well to the 'smile' and to them coming up closer. So they adapt their behaviour to please us, bless 'em.

Not sure if they are actually smiling but I had a dog that used to do it and it used to scare me and I would back out of the room.

I'm not sure. I have 2 Siberian Huskies, and it just seems to be their nature - they always look like they are smiling.
