You can tell tell where someone is from by their accent, yes. Real class is how you conduct yourself and treat others no matter where you are from.
Mind you, I have seen some beautifully dressed people, who have let themselves down as soon as they have opened their mouth!
People also take elocution lessons to help them further their career, and there is nothing wrong in that.

There are 'posh' accents from any region. I'm sure there are some people with 'middle class accents' who consider themselve superior but that's just the way some people are.

Yes, I have heard that there have been studies done on this very thing.
If you listen to what is being said and how it is being said, you can first determine the amount of education and then determine maybe where the person was raised and then go from there.
This is not just in the UK look at the USA and many other parts of the world, usually those who have money tend to have better language skills as well as many other things.

The English feel they are superior to anybody anyway.
The higher up the social ladder they get, the worse it is.*

No, it's not regional, it's a certain school or university accent that makes them consider themselves superior to all those who have kept a regional accent.

*those 2 statements are generalizations

Sorry I got into this without knowing it was primarily a question for British. I can still answer in a general way that speech patterns reveal different levels of society. It pretty much doesn't matter English or any other language it is ture for all language -- mabye even programming language? There is an advantage in being able to speak well.

To some extent, the perception of an English person's class is by the way that he/she speaks. It cannot really be applied to foreigners whose mother tongue is not English or appear not to be English.

Sad that this perception discriminates between "superior" and "lesser", but that is a matter of conduct by the observer, and not something that is necessarily intended by the speaker!

Well, no, not really. I have a Persian friend from a very wealthy background who was taught English by a Yorkshire man. As a consequence, he sounds like Eliza Doolittle. Funny.

So his accent when speaking English does not truly represent his social status.

Depends on the person, really. If they're open-minded, then that attitude isn't likely.

We've got a version of that here in the US. Us northerners tend to make fun of southerners & their accents.

no.... it doesnot matter unless and until it matters for you. Languages differ from place to place.... like in india you have got around eighteen different languages, where as china has got its language as chinese and japan has japanese and so on. UK has got english.so everyone should be ofcourse proud of his or her own culture and language.therefore it doesn't really matters which accent or language you have unless and untill you are good and pure in your culture. we are not britishers, indians , chinese, japanese , nepalis, americans etc.. we r above all humans and let your culture, language etc.. not come in the path way of being. a humanbeing........
