When the BBC did its Big Read it was Lord of the Rings http://www.bbc.co.uk/arts/bigread/top100.shtml but then that was in the midst of all the LOTR film hype a few years back.
If you want the most popular book this week, then the Bookseller does the weekly book charts, bit like the pop charts - http://www.thebookseller.com - today its The Island by Victoria Hislop.
