For the past 3 months, I have been eating a low fat diet and running (mostly, some walking) 3.5 miles 2-3 times per week. I've also been lifting weights about once a week for the past month. While my progress is slower than I hoped, I am still happy that I lost about 6-7 pounds (from around 177-178 to 170-172), and my body fat dropped from 29.3% to 27.6%. I suspect that I am not doing better because I'm eating too much and have too much sugar (fruit juice and soy milk) and carbohydrates.

Anyway, my change in body fat percentage is equivalent to about 3 pounds of fat, but I lost about 6-7 pounds in total weight. I can't imagine that I lost muscle, because I'm exercising and get a lot of protein. I understand that there can be some inaccuracies in the measurements, but I clearly lost weight from something in addition to body fat. Where did this other weight loss come from?

My ideas? Try to do 200 minutes of cardio a week. Remember fat does not turn into muscle, so you need to lose your fat while putting on muscle. Work hard, but don't over 60 minutes at a time. Do planks and other abs exercises on alternate days.

On training days, do 5-10 minutes of cardio to warm up, then do your weight training. Do 30 to 60 minutes more of cardio, then go home.

The best time to eat is just after your workout within an hour when your metabolism is raging. For your muscles, incorporate some isolated soy protein or whey protein. Whey is more potent but the soy tastes better!

Don't look at your scale as the be all and end all, but get a measuring tape to check your progress, and that will show more tangible results.

Read magazines like Shape, Womens Fitness, Fitness, etc to get tips and to stay motivated.

Good luck and stick at it. This plan has lost me 20 lbs in 12 weeks so far, just go for it!

When you first start a diet of sorts you lose fluids in the initial stages, this would account for the 4 pounds.
