That all depends on the writer or publisher. Authors with a successful track record will earn more (not sure if royalties vary or they just earn more because they sell more books) and they'll definitely get larger advances. First time authors won't get large advances usually unless the publisher is convinced they've got a best seller on their hands.

Maybe you could contact some publishers and ask them what their typical payments are.
