how to separate skin and muscle from sticking together after stitches?

i understand this a normal process after stitches are done and the skin and muscle tends to stick together from scar tissue reducing normal movement.how long does it take to separate them both for normal movement and what are the ways to do so?

this happened to my husband and they had him to massage the area several times a day to pull the tissue apart. He did have to rub it fairly hard to get it to work. Nothing painful as I remember.
