Israel has a policy of compulsory military service (unless you are an orthodox jew, in which case you are exempt form military service but have to do other service instead). This military service is not neccesarily full time, after all its compulsory and the main aim is to ensure that there are significant numbers of people with military training (it also helps to create a feeling of unity and paranoia [that everyone IS out to get you]).

after completing your service you are then on the reserve list and can be called up next time Israel goes on an away day pillage and Bombing trip in Palestine, Gaza or Lebanon.

Yes, it is. Only in the fact that most of the population in the country has to join. If you vacation in the resort districts of Israel, after or a little before one year, most people leave. The reason, if you stay one year or longer in the country, you have to join the Israel Army. It is law. The size of the United States Army and Marine Corps together encompasses the entire Israel Army, and then some. My brother's one friend went there for his Jewish Mission in tenth grade, he left after ten months because he knew that if he stayed, he would be required to join. That's why their military is more relaxed, because there are so many people to pick up the slack elsewhere.

Although serving in the military is compulsory this can be done much the same as an ordiary job. You do not have to live in a barracks permanently. sometimes not at all. Military personell seem to prefer this and it is cheaper for the forces as they spend less on housing and feedin their personell.

Excuse me? Israel military lenient? You been watching the news for the last couple of months? - nothing against the poor 'grunts' who have to fight and be killed and maimed but big problems as to why they laid waste to another country over two kidnapped soldiers and why America's administration are so behind this carnage

All armies are lenient it depends on the level of alertness. When you are on full alert they will not let you to even go and pee. Have you asked him how many hours he works in a day? Maybe he is working 16 hr shifts a day.
