there are to many to answer,genetics,lack of oygen before birth,lack of oygen during birth ,cord round neck,illness in childhood ,mother abusing alcohol or drugs whilst pregnant,the list goes on.

dumplingm has answered this question correctly but the only thing I would like to add is age. Above the age of 40 it's not safe for a woman to get pregnant or the child might be a retard.

First of all I hate the word retarded. Mentally challenged is better and used today. To answer your question, mental disorders are caused by a lack of connections in the brain, lack of oxygen, brain injuries, or any number of causes.

I have a retarded sister. And I have always believed that she is God's blessing to us. For she is a blessing. I know they can be agrivating but if you will let it they will be one of the biggest blessing you have ever had believe me they are so pure of thought because they will never mentally grow up they will be with God again one day. You can bet on that. I also had a alchohol syndrome foster child one time. I had her for 3 years. She was a royal pain but she was my royal pain for a while. And to this day I still count her as my personal blessing from God his self. Because she was another blessing from God She like my sister where the biggest blessing God could ever give me. I have all kinds of blessings from God so don't think I don't thank God for what I have had and still have I was also blessed with 3 boys of my own and I have another foster daughter that to this day still calls me mom and has given be 3 beautifull grandchildren. Plus my own boys have given me 11 of the most presious grand children a person could have. I am also just about to become a great grandmother for the 1st time.
Sorry this turned out so long but this is how I feel about retarded children when they become adults they are still one of God's children because they never truley grow up,

If you are refering to Down Syndrome, it is due to an extra chromosome that leads to overexpression of genes.
This natural mutation is more common in pregnancies after the pregnant woman reaches ages above 35.
The chances increase as woman ages. 1/ 100 to up to 1/4! So if you are planning to have a child, have it earlier.

Mental Disability can be caused by numerous conditions and environments from Drug/alcohol abuse during pregnancy, to abnormalities/malformations of the foetus and even the conditions of the birth such as lack of oxygen and extreme prematurity. Sometimes it is diagnosed during pregnancy...and unfortunatly sometimes is it just being really unlucky. Hope this helps !

This happens when you marry your relatives (like cousin). This is because the DNA genome of yours will almost be the same as your relatives with few changes. Nature wants variety in the DNA genome of the growing baby because that is when the human generation will evolve and continue. Else this is what happens.
