It's obvious that there are much more serious offenses committed on our roadways...one's that are much more responsible for killing people everyday. ie:crossing lines, improper lane changes (also merging on highways), lack of turn signal usage, running stop lights, cell phone use etc.. Why isn't law enforcement more aggresive on THSES issues? What can be done?

pasta326...you seem very simple-minded and probably didn't even read the whole question. I asked a very valid question and you gave a very childish answer. Anyone else who feels they want to answer in this manner should not waste the space. Thanks. And I thank everyone else for their answers so far.

I hope this to be the last detail, but it was necessary...to jatz46, speeding can be a contributing factor BUT is it the CAUSE of accidents? If someone pulls on the highway at 10mph in front of a truck doing the speed limit? Someone oncoming drifts into your lane while you and they are doing the speed limit, or even lower? Inattention kills, mam.

Because it's easily enforced and keeps the figures up.

Speed in itself is NOT dangerous, inappropriate speed is. It is not people speeding that causes accidents, it's the fact that a lot of people can't drive at an appropriate speed, or in an appropriate way, for the conditions in which they are driving.

Dangerous Drivers costs lives NOT speed.

Yes, there are more serious offenses, illegal lane changing, flashing headlights to all the other cars on the road, my pet peeve is the guy that's weaving in and out of lanes to get to the traffic light first. However, Statistics do show that Speed is a major contributing factor in crashes, (along with alcohol, which is actually 1st) additionally, this is why you get to those very odd looking MVA's and the first thing the guy says is, I was coming down, maybe three over the limit and my steering wheel stopped responding and my brakes went out too....then you look at the 50ft. skid marks leading to the wreckage and wonder why do people lie to me? Everybody speeds, everybody, unless you bought a new car and you just want to cruise, for that reason, I start pulling people over at 10 over, (yes you can be pulled over at 1 over) if you're going 40/30 residential it really shows some type of disregard for safety of others because your car is just a machine, and the limit is there because someone has calculated a prudent speed for you to be able to control and stop the vehicle on an emergency situation....Please continue to practice safe driving habits, speed or no speed, just don't run anybody over....

Speed is a casual factor in all traffic crashes. If they were not moving there would not be a crash. Speed is enforced over all the other areas you mention because it is easier to monitor. You can sit on an interstate for 15 minutes and get a speeder. To pick an intersection and sit there for 15 minutes you probably are not going to get the violations because the drivers see the squad. An intersection is flat so people can see. The best way is to use cover cars and call them out, but this only works for an hour or so before word gets out and then all the people involved are a wasted resource. The easiest way to monitor intersections is with cameras and cite people through the mail. Most people do not like this approach. So it comes down to where can you get the most contacts with the public and get the message out. Comes down to speeding. Hope this answer helps.

Is it the NFL that places lots emphasis on the 40 time or is it the media and the followers? the 40 time is yet between the failings the NFL seems at. additionally they look at strenght, severe leap, 3 cone drill, physique measurements, 20 backyard chop up time and various of different drills on the integrate and private exercising habitual days. Many place particular drills additionally are run on the integrate. Oh yea, and there is that little component with regard to the capacity to play the recreation as viewed on action picture. via the time an NFL scout gets to the integrate, he has viewed hours upon hours of recreation action picture on the draft possibilities besides as long gone to practices and talked with coachs. The integrate is merely one area of the greater suitable entire. The 40 is yet one small area of the integrate. unfortunately, the media merely likes to chat approximately 40 cases. think of approximately it, whilst is the final time you observed a draft internet site or media outlet checklist on a gamers 3 cone drill time? not in many cases. Blame the media, not the NFL.

I totally agree with the questioner. Speed is NOT the number one cause of traffic accidents as professed in the other answers. BAD DRIVING however, is. Speeding is constantly targeted by politicians trying to score Brownie points because it is easy to quantify and measure, and therefore more likely to generate revenue from fines.

Other traffic offenses are more subjective (eg following/stopping distance depend on condition of tyres and brakes and road surface, and the reaction speed of the driver) with no clear cut rules (the Road Code is full of 'suggestions' and 'recommendations'), making it too easy to avoid prosecution.

At the end of the day it comes down to money. It is cheaper to issue speeding tickets and make the public believe you are doing all you can through constant propaganda and half truths, than it is to train people to drive safely and considerately.

It's like the the campaign about smoking, it gives people the feeling something is being done. Please mind, I'm NOT in favour of reckless driving, but I believe being over a sometimes very arbitrary speed limit is not anything that should lead to people loosing their licence.
People should cop on and form pressure groups, like the Germans did very successfully when their gouvernment tried to introduce an absolute speed limit on motorways.

Because there are posted speed limit signs everywhere. You seem like you complain about every other thing about drivers except for speeders. Improper lane changes, and not proper merging are usually the result of speeding. And you're also implying that speed doesn't kill. Your misinformed. It does.

Because that's where the money is at. Speeding tickets are a main source of revenue for any town. Government cares nothing for individual safety.
