human nature to take short cuts. i guess if you type a lot it becomes important, like you wouldn't drive all the way around your neighborhood on the way home if there was a straight path right ?
i think those of us over 25 or whatever find the "ur" and "4" annoying cause we didn't really grow up w/ cell phones or texting or anything.

I totally agree. Its become so bad that children doing exams are having to have their papers back as the markers just don't know how to read them! Its ok in text messages as long as the other person understands as there is a limit to how many words you can write on some phones but in everyday life its not a good idea. Its just laziness I think.

Because lots of younger folks think that e-mail is less formal than a hard-copy. They are wrong -- but being young is all about growing up!
In business, typing out entire words in e-mails is far more professional than using kooky abbreviations.

well i would suppose it is computer slang, but as a college graduate i just see it as stupidity. people don't talk in abbreviations, but the biggest problem is illiteracy. some schools are actually teaching children to spell/write phonetically, so howz that 4 being prepared 4 the reel world??? stupid people annoy me.

Text messages services used to charge by the keystroke. That contributed to the shortening of words.

I can understand why they do it when texting on phones, but beyond that, I really don't know. It annoys the hell out of me to try and decypher what some people are trying to say.

WTF RU talking about? RU silly? IC great advantage to saving a few keystrokes! LOL... It is hard 2C how you could be down on that.
After all, people have been using contractions for hundreds of years. And they are not event typing most of the time when they use them, they are just saving the breath/time it takes to enunciate one extra syllable.

dat's ok fur texting, but it's better to type coherantly on a computer. I would guess they don't know much about computers and/or may have a problem with spelling/vocabulary.
