Why is Bill used as a nickname when there is no B in William?

Why is Bill used as a nickname when there is no B in William?

I just had a new grandson, they named him William, but they want to call him Bill. There is no B so why not it be Will for short.

And there is a bill sound in that but no william at all????!!!!
English...no wonder so many wanna dispose of it and do Spanish...
