Are you more likely to give a speeding ticket to a driver with a newer or nicer than average vehicle (because you think they can afford it) than to someone with an older, run down looking vehicle (because they may not seem so able to afford it)?

My basic philosophy is to use the lowest level of enforcement necessary to correct the situation. Social economic factors do not play any factor in my decision. I give citations based on severity of the infraction and the driver's attitude. For a minor infraction, I wait until I speak to the driver before I make a decision and if just speaking to the driver is sufficient to correct the problem, then I don't need any enforcement action other then record the stop. The car, gender, race, or such do not matter to me. But, a way to guarantee a citation is to try to flirt, intimidate, or being hostile because, by the driver’s action, the driver has shown me that just speaking with the driver has been insufficient.

Once I pull someone over, the attitude of the driver is usually what determines if they get a ticket, or a written warning. If you come across a guy who is cooperative and may even admit that he was going over, cause he just wanted to get home after a long day, and you can see that being stopped is more than likely going to make him think about doing it again the next day then, sure give the guy a warning, why not? The point of stopping someone is to get them to comply with the traffic/ safety code. Now on the other hand, you make contact with someone and the first thing out of their mouth is "are you certified to use a radar" (usually in a real condescending manner) then I just like to skip the nice and explanation and the where you headed today, all that good stuff, and I'll wipe the smile, put on my game face and say, "Yes sir, I am, either way, I'm glad that you were at least aware that you were speeding, being that you asked me if I was certified to operate a radar gun right off the bat" after that the guy knows he dug himself into a little hole and will probably wonder IF I was going to give him a ticket in the first place.

As a police officer, I can tell you that it has nothing to do with the car you drive, the clothes you wear, how low cut your shirt is or the color of your skin. People get tickets for the severity of the violation and their attitude. If you just did a gentle roll through a stop sign at 3am and are polite and admit you did it I'll never give you a ticket but if I walk up to the car and the first thing out of your mouth is "What the f****, don't you have a donut to eat or something!?" you can count on a ticket for the stop sign as well as anything else I can find wrong. Dropping names is also frowned upon. If you are such good friends with the chief, have him call me and we'll discuss your ticket. He knows how to reach me. Likewise, if you were just clocked going 70 in a 25 mph school zone, no amount of "Yes Sir, I'm sorry Sir" will keep you from getting a ticket. We all make mistakes while driving. Be polite,be honest and be safe. That's how to win a cop over.

Unfortunately, speed traps and the like have gotton to be just Cash Cows, not done for the protection of the public,...so yes I so think they target the nicer cars because most of the tickets are frivilous...I guess when they see an old cranker the get a few pains of conscious.

They do not discriminate or care what type of car you drive and they really dont care if you can afford the ticket...
