There's lot's of talk about turning off your TV at the wall to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This is because the little blue or red standby light actually uses a lot of energey.

The obvious answer is to use the switch on the wall. However my power point is behind the TV and is difficult to get at.

I'd like to save the planet but I'm terminally lazy.

Does anyone know of a remote device that I could use, or somehow attach, to completely shut off the power and save energy?

It's not just the led that uses elctricity. It's a bigger user than that.

TVs use up to 20 watts on standby.

Put an extension cord in the wall socket.

Keep the other end where you can reach it.

Plug TV into that end.

When not watching, pull TV plug from the cord.

This is such a good point. You are drawing amperage from any electrical device which is plugged into your wall socket EVEN IF THE DEVICE IS NOT TURNED ON. In the UK each socket can be switched on or off at the wall.

Wouldn't it be splendid if the same were true in the US?

Well, I suppose you can unplug things when not using them, or use a power strip with multiple plug sockets - or move to Europe??

(Not trying to insult you, BTW. Living in Europe can be very nice!)

Aren't there bigger issues to worry about....?
Look, the little standby light on your TV is a LED which consumes a whopping 0.2 Watt, or 1/300th of a "normal" light bulb! Add a little bit of standby electronics which recognizes whether you pressed the ON-button on your remote, say, max. 0.5 Watt in total.
Want to do something good?
Add motion detectors in those rooms where you usually leave the lights on by accident, so they turn off when nobody is in the room.
And turn hour heater down or air conditioner up by just one degree, and you can save electricity on a much larger scale.
And stop ironing your bed sheets.....

Better idea, just get an extension with a switch, and plug it in.
Turn of the switch in the extension.
