How do I rip a DVD to a format that can be used on MySpace/YouTube?

AND BEFORE ANYONE ASKS - It is MY HOME MOVIE DVD of MY HOLIDAY - Not a commercial film...

A step by step guide would be useful but I can work it out on my own if not...

You can extract from the DVD using mpeg streamclip (free for Mac and Windows)- you need to convert to mpeg4 format and re size to 320x240, making sure that the total size of your clip does not exceed 100Mb which can be adjusted via the mpeg4 compression rate set.
