They were toys from the mid 80's, the idea was imported from Japan and based off stuff like Robotech. Basically, they're robots from another planet that transform into everyday items so they could hide on Earth. The two sides were the Autobots (good guys) and Decepticons (bad guys). Most of the Autobots turned into vehicles, all of the rest were just about anything.
It had a long running cartoon and movie to supprt the toys, and now it's being remade into a big-budget Michael Bay movie.
