What does it matter if it does the job and makes you feel better, it is a cruel enough world out there

Couldn't possibly be one. A placebo is meant to help one get better, in this case it wouldn't just be a single human, but rather society as a total, without actually existing. Whereas god meets half the criteria possibly, the other half is clearly demonstrated to not match up, at least on a large scale.

as i was growing up i had a great belief in god, then the real world kicked in and i sort of started to have doubts about the whole thing. i am not saying there is no greater being and i would like to believe that there is more after death. but what? christian faith dictates that there are no such thing as spirits, now i have actually, honestly seen a few and my dad who is a great church goer says that that is the devil but how is it the person i have seen regularly was the most christian person possible if that is possible. i just cant decide and no person in or out of church seems to be able to answer my questions so maybe i will just have to wait and see

absolutely.
Prayer is not for world peace.
Prayer is for the peace of mind.
If it takes that type of "peace of mind" to make you a good person and help others and carry on this earth then do it. But when people begin to start holy wars, and let religions get in the way of diplomacy it becomes a MACRO problem instead of a MICRO problem.
I put my "faith" in truth. I am a realist. I generally know how the world operates and can't accept prayer or worship of false idols.

A placebo for what? Belief in God is a completely individual thing. I believe in God, but I don't believe it is due to my needing to have a placebo in my life to cover up inadequacies.
Keep on praying, my friend. It's a good thing to question your faith - it makes you realize why it's important to you. Good question!!!

Organized religion, yes, much more than belief in God. The former is nonsense served to calm the masses; the latter, personal choice. Happy praying.

i think you need to take time and reason out why and what you believe about God. I think the existance of a God is as provable as the non existance. I do think going along with the crowd is a short term solution to long term problems.

I think it is more a sedative alternated with methamphetamine dispensed by the preacher when it is convenient to stir the flock.

I don't think so. It's not that easy to carry the cross necessary to be one of Christ's followers
