It is fair, because that is untrue. You hold the key to your happiness, and no one else. Other people can only have the effect you allow them to have.

2 problems with your question.....one who ever told you life was fair? I hate to be the one to tell you but they lied, life is rarely ever fair. second, people only affect your happiness to the extent that you allow them too. That is power, you have to give someone the power to influence how you feel, if you don't give it to them they can't do it. That is like passing out keys to your car to everyone in town and then complaining about how many people drive it. Don't give out so many keys! Be more selective about who you grant the privelege of that power and you won't have this problem anymore.
