I am SO sick of people asking me when my boyfriend and I are getting engaged.
We are going to an engagement party for our friends soon, and I know heaps of people will sarcastically and seriously ask me.
I need a really smart ass reply to give to them. For god's sake I am happy living in my relationship with my boyfriend of 5 years. People don't get it!

Just say "When we'll get engaged, it will be a front page news so if you wanna catch up with it, hurry and get your subscribtion now!"
Believe me, when you will say that in full speed with a naughty smile on your face and walk over to someone else, they will get a shock of embarrassment :P

A smart ass reply simply sounds like you are being defensive. Ann Landers or Dear Abby (sorry cannot remember which one) once said the best way to answer personal questions like that is to turn it around on the asker.
Say something like "why would you ask such a personal question?" and walk away. No one can make you answer.

Smart reply: "Even GOD is single so why is it a problem for you that I am?" Also read the book "Kiss My Tiara: How to Rule the World as a Smartmouth Goddess" by Susan Jane Gilman. She has half a chapter on smart and funny replies to relatives/friends wanting to know when you are getting married/engaged.

There isn't any reason to give a smart*** reply. I know it gets old, but just tell them, that you are happy with the current arrangments and that when we are ready we will get engaged.

I don't think you should contemplate giving a rude response. You say "people don't get it" - well, they are concerned for you. It's odd to be in a relationship of five years without marriage.
