My limited understanding it that the word can equally be translated as 'white raisins,' which is supposed to be a big deal in middle eastern cultures, even better than virigins.

the promise of 72 virgins to any Muslim that dies in holy war - Jihad is included in Muslim holy scriptures.
Personally I think it's the same old virgins from the time of the Prophet Mohamed, and with all those dead Jihadists over 1400 years I doubt if they remained as they were. but Allah works miracles, if you believe.

Have you ever heard of any Arab father tell his young virgin daughters,
"Oh my sweet child, I shall clothe you, feed you, teach you all about this world. I will love you for all eternity. You will listen to your mother and help your father, you will struggle with issues as you get older and form opinions, you will devout youself to life. Then when you die your reward for all this will be to wait in heaven in groups of 72 for a jihad monster who believes he has earned a privilege to be with you."
