I love community service- especially helping teen-aged homeless/drug abusers kick their habits or gain a little self confidence. How can I find a job where I can do these things and keep my hair dyed green? I don't know how to find a job like this at all- only community service.

Most social service types are very conventional. Increasingly the federal and state governments also require that the be super conformists who gladly fill out mountains of paper work. Some genuinely want to make a difference and if they are tough enough they can make some improvements but the have to lay low and pretend to fit the mold while engaging in a skunk-works. Sorry, no green hair permitted.

Well the green issue is interesting. If you are willing to change the color for the sake of the cause there is allot you can do. If you qualify the dhs (department of human services) sometimes pays for college to be a social worker and in return you work for them a few years. If you never want to change the color, you could try street ministry of sorts. Not preaching, but the helping. I already do that, but I do it by emailing politicians about what is going wrong and I also help were I can, because I don’t drive. .

You want to be taken seriously, and are serious about a career in that field? Then give up the green hair...sure everyone has a right to free expression, but since that is a fad 20 years down the road you'll look back and probably say I can't believe I wore green hair, why not just put that on a back burner and get your education/degree so you can help people and get a paycheck while doing it...there is such a demand for nurses in the US it's incredible, all fields of it....Good Luck to you, go for it!!!!

Go to college and get into the Human Services programs they all offer. Right now, the field is screaming for help. Exactly the thing you are looking to get into. I am 56 and going backto school this fall to enter that field. Man, 56. I know I will be the oldest ol fart there, but what am I gonna do? I REALLY want this. Especially helping underachievers. When ya get a fire burning under US, no telling where it might go.

You seem sincere, commited, & sharp. Try various agencies & associations.

Since you have green hair, sincerely want to help people, and are a creative individual, consider getting materials on business law, accounting, grant writing, & business management. You will have to create a business that will attract others like you so that you will set the example for other agencies. You will be more satisfied.

** Get the movie "The boy with Green Hair" you will be impressed

Be a social worker. You'd need a college degree in the subject, though.

Or how about volunteering overseas? Go to sites like the Red cross, or Amnesty International, or Save the Children. They probably have volunteer programs that you can spend a few months abroad, or even apply to a paid internship position.
Good luck!

One thing that I've learned over the years is that almost ALL work helps other people.

The idea that working for free helps them more is extremely strange and also almost always untrue.

Helping people like you listed: homesless, drug abusers, and such, is a difficult thing for even highly trained professionals to do. Many of them do not want help, and they can easily get worse if you feed their childish ways.

In any case, don't forget that taking care of yourself will lead to being able to help others for real in the longer run. Bill Gates, for example, will do more for helping world heath than many nations, and his approach was to get successful first: smart approach and highly effective.

for one thing if you love helping people your avatar looks more like you want to kill people and green hair, the only place you can work with that is a rock music store or something of that sort. most all of it is on a donated time basis, few people get paid unless they have a degree in child welfare or something.
