You have a slight problem. One that can be fixed though ! If people cannot be forgiven for their past sins, then the entire world is doomed. You learn by the mistakes of the past. Your attitude is what is wrong with this country. That huge chip that you carry on your shoulder either needs to be knocked off or gently removed. Only you can decide how that happens. You don't have to be a proud American, in fact , you don't have to be an American at all. Your choice , not Americas.

Dude, get a life. For crip sakes be happy you can legally spue this crap in the first place. Secondly, just because my forefathers did something definitely doesn't make me responsible. That's like blaming the Native Americans forefathers for murdering all the other immigrants that also crossed the great ice sheet, that's right white people and blacks were here in America along side the not so Native Americans till they murdered them all over territory. (don't believe me, watch the history channel sometime).

wow this point i have made yet with a different point of view and so i shall share my point of view.
first of all America is not the proper name for the continent and i stress this reason being "America" was not discovered, the Indians were here and it was taken. you know i must do some research to find what they called the land which is now called America, you know i feel very strongly about the Indians here should have the right to name the land of there forefathers.

I understand your point of view also on the Proud American notion you mentioned.
How could i be proud? for my people weren't treated properly also the land which they brung the Africans to was rugged raw mean and new to my people! We survived! We live! And with so much love we need for our bad treatment to be acknowledge we need our 40 acres and a mule! Last but not least we need to forgive move on and grow, prosper as a people we need to heal from these wounds we still today bleed!
now to directly answer your question
You don't have to be a "Proud American" your points are valid yes indeed. and you know what hurt me the most is no country continent of people of all race creed and color not to mention religion tried to stop the slave trade or stop the mistreatment of the Africans, No one intervened. All and i mean everybody was Indifference.
I do understand that the practice of slavery was normal practice alright!
"America was never proud of me!! it didn't like me it used and abused me! So we grumble and we wait for an Apology"!

Remember...NOBODY is holding a gun to your head forcing you to live here...if you are that disgusted w/ your country i'm sure there are some other places in this world that you may find it more at home. It never ceases to amaze me that the people who criticize and act ashamed of the fact that they are American NEVER try to leave! If i didnt like a place so much, i would leave but perhaps they like having the freedom to express their disgust, a freedom that they have HERE mind you and a freedom that is rare in other parts of the world. I wonder if the mexicans who jump across the border or the cubans who build rafts out of tin cans feel that they are coming to an oppressive evil greedy nation? Methinks not. I would love to get census or immigration records or whatever of the total number of Americans who expatriate themselves annually vs. the number of immigrants (legal and illegal) who come to america. I think we all know which number is much larger!

How does the Government oppress other cultures? I see where your going with the first part, alot of the nations past is nothing to be proud of, but you can say the same for almost every nation in the world. As for today I don't see how the government is oppresive, sure there are individuals who are still prejudice and straight up racist but I think the Government has done a good job of leveling the playing field as best as THEY can. Its now up to the individual.

Wow. With all of that weight on your shoulder of guilt, it's a wonder you haven't ended it all.

Every nation was created by bloodshed, murdering of children, women and men, and slavery. Since our country is newer, it seems like we are the only ones. Delve into history - you will see. I mean, let's discuss the ancient Egyptians. You think the rich and the pharoes were out there in the hot sun building those pyramids?? Nope - the SLAVES did it. And you think that the great kingdoms were gotten by saying "please"? Nope - WAR.

Again, your song and dance - though quite a laugh for my husband and I - is very self-important. It is the way it is. That is a fact of history. Look into any history of any country, and you will find all of what you are ashamed of - and more.

It kind of makes you think that this is our lineage, as if this is what we continue to do. It might be true. People have away of glamorizing their past, because it gives them political present day status, ie we are one with those great men like Washington. When you look into historical documentation, we see that Washington was greatly romanticized, as were all historical figures. However, look on the bright side, it's hard to name a country that wasn't founded on violence, perhaps it is human nature, perhaps we still need to grow. Don't forget, but do forgive. To grow, we need to get over things, and look at them with eyes unclouded.

What nation wasn't founded on war? You're hatred for America is misplaced. What you really hate is your own pathetic little soul and it inability to make anything meaningful of itself in the world as it is (blood, guts, warts and all, it is still beautiful).

Some cultures, like Islamic jihadism, need to be exterminated for the good of mankind, Muslim and infidel alike. Some traditions just become outdated and die of their own accord, or do you think the world should never change?

Oh, I believe jgmcs is American alright.

I just happen to believe that jgmcs is a youthful American with a chip on his/her shoulder.

You may feel cursed to be a American jgmcs... I feel blessed to be a American.

Your complaints are at least 3 decades old. Quite frankly, we are getting tired of hearing them. Noone today is oppressing you. If you feel oppressed you have no one to blame but yourself.

Oh my goodness! Find some zoloft!

Where is a single country that does not have a history of violent uprisings, hostile take-overs, and subjugation of natives?

You should learn about history globally, and then look at the modern world. If you study you'll find plenty of reasons to be grateful and proud of your country.
