What sort of schedule should I keep....like 1 mile 3 X week and increase from there. Running used to be fun and effortless for me. I'd like to get back there.

The first thing that you should do is consult your doctor to insure that you are in relative good health. Upon doing this and getting a clean bill of health, you should try walking from 30 minutes to a hour for a week. This stretches your muscles and improves your circulation. Then, I would suggest doing an alternate walk and run routine. Alternate walking and running a quarter mile or even a half mile. Do this for a week. Only after this, go for a mile, 3 times a week. Give yourself a day of rest between runs. As you gain strength and stamina, slowly increase your amount to two miles. After doing this for a week or three, increase your speed. Then alternate, adding a quarter mile or half mile. Test your limits slowly and you should improve in six months to about 3 miles in 30 to 40 minutes. Take it slow at first. If you get hurt, then you will lose interest and quit.

It depends upon your stamina as well as your age and present health situation. If you are of Athletic make , then you can go for 5-10 miles. But for an average person 2-3 miles is good to start with. For weak persons , just1-2 miles is good.

All habits have a danger factor. Run but do not make it a habit.
