Some traits neither increase nor decrease the genetic fitness of the individual. Eye color may be one of those traits. So as far as that goes, why not 1 basic color? Why not a dozen?
The other responders have a point - the variety of human eyecolor is very great. My girlfriend has eyes that are at least 5 clearly different shades.

Hi Anarkya, Your forgetting 2 difference eye colors on 1 person.Yes i have seen this myself.A woman had 1 blue eye, and 1 brown eye,and it really didn't look bad at all.I think why its just these 3 color, is they are dominated colors for our eyes.

You need to get out more! I've seen blue-gray, ice blue, navy blue, blue-green, blue-green with gold flecks, hazel, hazel with green flecks, black, gray, pale gray that looks almost silver ringed with black, amber, tawny yellow, and violet.
Mine are light brown with gray rings around the iris. Open your eyes, my friend.

Actually, not sure wher eyou got your data from, but thats not accurate. My eyes actually change colors depending on my moods. They go from green, blue, violet, black and haze.
