if they have been together for a long time it's not likely. Is there something in the cage he could have hurt himself on?

I have my doubts that it is the babies killing each other. Babies may push and shove each other and jockey for position but they are not really fighting like adults do. Baby beaks are too soft to do damage to the point of death. If the heads of the babies are damaged it is an adult. Sun conures dont even have strong enough beaks to do damage yet as adults they can shred any wood. The egg tooth which is the only strong part of the beak soon falls off after hatching. In a colony it is probably a strange adult doing the killing. It may be difficult to find the culprit/s. Are the parents guarding the box? The hen should be inside and the male close by outside the box. Make sure that there are more nest boxes than possible pairs about 1-2 extra nest boxes for 3-5 pairs. Also if you have too many females for the males this happens. Extra males dont seem to be so much of a problem in small birds. Make the parents have lots of extra soft food to feed the babies. I use pro nutro or crushed pellets or handfeeding formula mixed with water in a separate dish to the soft food given to adults. A seed only diet for a budgie is not really good enough to raise babies. My budgies are bred in a colony and I have never had a problem with babies hurting each other. The sun conures are in pairs. At 17 to 20 days a budgie can be taken from the nest a handfed easily. Only problem is that the requires frequent feeding till they can eat at about 30 days then handfeeding is more of a supplement till fully weaned. Competition causes casualties, only the strongest survive so make it easy for the parents to raise healthy babies.

Yes, my girlfriend's daughter had two parakeets, and the one did kill the other. I don't know exactly how, but at one moment both were fine and a hour later she heard some rustling and came back in the room to find one bird dead on the bottom of the cage.

Yes the can a will fight, either for space or food. IF they are new to each other they will fight for protection on what they think is theirs. If they where together in the cage from where ever you got them, the move to a new area could have frightened them. Since you don't know if their had a fight check your cages and anywhere they can get to for things that can injure your birds. And take them both to an avain vet, the one with the cut will need to be seen to.

Well most aniamls won't fight to the death but if you take two animals that are not bonded together, and place them together in an enclosure when they try to establish a territory one is unable to get away and one can become either really injured or dead. Two solutions to fix the problem are to get a bigger cage or have 2 cages set up.

Like any animal, they can fight to the death, but mostly work out their problems before it leads to that. Keep an eye on them, you may have to separate and then try again later with them.
