I'm just home from a digital photography class. Digital Zoom is useless - you want optical (digital just stretches the photo and fills in the gaps with similar colours optical is actually photo realistic and true to the photo you took.)

Two different classes I've taken have said that for the average user 3-4 megapixels is sufficient (and will print high quality 4x6 5x7 and 8x10 photos - use more mega pixels if you plan to print photos larger than this otherwise the file sizes are silly and sending them for printing online or emailing them becomes a hassle.) Mega pixels are sexy right now and salesmen will try to convince you that you need 5.0 or even 8.0 but really you don't.

I've got a Canon S80, but it's pretty high end (because with a new baby at home I'm really getting into photography)... any of the Canon A series cameras would likely be sufficient for a beginner or an infrequent user. (My parents have a Canon A series camera from about a year ago and are thrilled with it.)

Some camera's have a little on-board memory or come with a small memory card, but you'll likely want to buy a bigger memory card or you won't be able to hold many photos on the camera and you'll have to upload them to a computer or get them printed all the time. I got a 1 gig card for about $40 Cdn. and it holds over 1000 medium resolution photos or at least a couple minutes of video.
