its part of their religous obligations so to speak. they believe that the body of a woman should be coverd as completely as possisble when out of the house and in the presence of visitors. it also makes it possible for them them to protect the beauty of their wives and daughters from jealous people and curbs the likelyhood that a uy would hit on hit the woman about a pretty face since he cant see that face. i guess thats all i know about islamic culture and practices

"There is no compulsion in religion. The right direction is henceforth distinct from error. And he who rejects false deities and believes in Allah has grasped a firm handhold which will never break. Allah is All-Hearer, All-Knower"
[Qur'an 2:256]

Many Muslim women wear the hijab to be modest in this modern era of mixed-sex societies, where men and women co-mingle, and come into close proximity with each other in public places, including the workplace.

Contrary to how it may appear to a westerner, it's a symbol of respect for the women who wear it.

The decision to wear it is entirely up to them. They are simply practicing their religion. There are many women in Islamic and Arabic countries who do not wear the Hijab, but nevertheless, follow all the teachings and yearly rituals of the religion and perform their daily prayers (they must wear the hijab during prayer), as well as adhere to all aspects of the faith.

True faith is in the heart of the individual.

Until the Imperialists invaded Muslim Countries and the Muslims started mixing with non-believers, all our Muslim women walked in this world with great respect and dignity. The non-believers were finding it very difficult to come anywhere near the border of our Muslim sisters purity. The Hijab did not only protect them from those evil eyes of non-believers but also gave them freedom and independence from being misused by them

Removal of the Hijab had exactly the same effect. At one time, you were independent and lived with dignity, but now you are nothing but a slave of your evil desire and behave worse than a kafir. By removing your Hijab, you have destroyed your faith.

Because in Islam, they are not suppose to show those parts to people other man besides their husband.

They have to cover their heads and all the way to their feet and palms.

In some cases some woman choose to wear a veil too because in some arabian countries, they are so beautiful, the husband wants them to cover up to avoid adultary.

well, most of them (it's a culture thing) feel they should be sheltered from the sun or wind. they believe they will get sick easy if they have any less clothes on. also, some of the husband want them to cover so no other man will look at them or their uncovered skin. it basically comes down to culture and not so much religion ----I think.
