Here's what I do:

1) Stay away from caffeine 10 hours before bedtime

2) Drink 1 - 2 litres (4-8 cups) of water before hittin' the hay.

3) Optional - Occasional - St. john's wort.

Be really active during the day, then find a nice quiet activity to clear your mind before bed. You'll be tired from the activity and you won't be kept up by all those loose thoughts because they worked themsleves out during your "quiet time."

have a cup of green tea, put some candles on and play your favorite music and try to sleep

DON'T EAT 3 HOURS BEFORE BEDTIME
EXERCISE EARLY IN THE EVENING.

SAY YOUR PRAYERS
DON'T HAVE ANY THING WEIGH ON YOUR CONSCIENCE
...AND I WILL TAKE A BENEDRYL ON OCCASION.
