Because the talk consisted of birds having eggs in a nest and then hatching them, and bees going from flower to flower to pollinate them - most people a few generations back were too embarrassed to talk of sex in a matter of fact way.

It's supposed to be an attempt at humor.

Typically the Inept Dad has to tell his son about sex. So he uses the metaphor of how bees pollinate the flowers and how birds sit on the eggs.

It is supposed to be lame because it's a joke!

I always thought it was because of nature. Like sex being in human nature or something.
It's ridiculous, but it was societies first attempts at sex talk. Before they just got you married and shoved you into the marital bedroom, locked the door and let you find out the hard way!
