The only problem with using games and net surfing to wind down is that they often stir up the mind. I used to only use those. It might help to find another way to relax and trade thirty minutes of your game/surfing time for something like yoga. I've found that yoga helps with relaxing quite a bit.

Your problem in sleeping sounds very familiar!
You are doing it all wrong... change style!
Surfing the net is not as relaxing as you wish it to be. Its not too different from what you already do in the office.
I would suggest (I should know, I am cured!) you do something physical to relax and to build up your 'demand' for sleep. I had tried swimming say, 1 kilometer a day...and you may find yourself falling asleep before your head touch the pillow... or run the HHH...work out a great sweat and feel your legs trembling from exertion...and you get the same result.....a good night of sound sleep!
Vary the above with cycling (say, start with 5 km), jogging, squash or even golf (dont use a caddy...pull your trolley & walk!), etc.
One word of caution though....if you had been sedentary for some time.....go check out with your doctor before you start your sleep inducing exercise.
Make a resolution, get up, sweat...and go on to enjoy your sleep. You will soon feel on top of the world.
I cant be wrong. I am 57. I started the above.......and I am sleeping well and walking around like I am in my teens again!

I have a lot of the same problems minus the kids. My problems were I think largely due to the late night shift work I did as a teenager which i think screwed up my biorythym. To help the problem I've cut out caffeine and run in the evenings to tire myself out. I'd suggest though that you talk to a doctor to see if they can help, also, it might be just that you have a yonge kid, I don't have any myself but from what I understand yonge kids can totally drain there parents. Good luck.

Hi,
My answer is unusual but my solution works. I say this because I have been the worst insomniac in the past, so bad a surgeon could not knock me out with anethesia and he was very alarmed. I could not fall asleep for hours or stay asleep and sleeping pills did not work much.
I studied books and all the info I could find and found none of the traditional remedies helped me. So I kept studying on my own, knowing there is a solution. And I found the answer that will work for you. Of course, insomnia is a huge national problem affecting 30% of adults one would think health care professionals would know the answer but they don't. They tried to treat me and failed and I have interviewed a variety of them and learned they just don't know the answer, only sleeping pill treatements and the obvious solution of tips and techniques like avoiding caffeine or exercising, going to sleep at the same time each night. I did all these to no avail.
So for the unwinding part, do this rather than what you are doing now as my approach is much more efficient; takes no time to fall alseep or "unwind". What I learned is the cause for insomnia is a lack of peace in ones mind/heart/being. I figured this out because kids are the best sleepers on earth and they like to be light hearted and have a good time. Kids have enormous reserves of peace in their hearts/beings and so it is simple for them to fall asleep and stay asleep. Whereas in my experience many adults are too serious and uptight in our uptight society.
So I began to watch kids and kids movies, read kids books and learn 1+ new joke a week and begin thinking funny about life. My humor/joy threshold dropped and life became much more fun and I began sleeping way better. I do pranks on my family and listen to rock and roll as I did as a teenager (they sleep great :) and I talk kids out for ice cream often and admire their joy--it rubs off! Also, I spend time with adults I call "otters", those type of adults who like to joke around (in a positive way) all day long. I keep cute pictures of pets as my background on my pc (kids love dogs).
Of course this solution takes time to implement, just like losing weight takes months. But it is a permanent solution much safer and lower cost than drugs and lot more fun. You need to lighten up to sleep and not be so serious. Act like the best sleepers, little kids who like to joke around all the day long.
I now fall right to sleep when I go to bed and can easily sleep 6 hrs in a night. This is less sleep than I used to sleep but I am adjusting and expect in a month I will feel totally, completely healed and continue having more fun every day, as I do now. And I love sleeping less because there is so much I want to do each day. just like working out gives you more endurance, sleeping less makes your body need less sleep. So you need to find a happy medium of less sleep and more peace to get to your ideal sleep amount-- mine is six hours, yours may be 5, 7 or 8 eight hours. You will adjust over time; just know even though you are tired during the day your body is adjusting to needing less sleep.
This is the answer for someone who needs more hours than the day provides. Allow yourself to go without enough sleep knowing that in time your body will adjust. Bill Frist, the leader of the US Senate is an extreme example. He sleeps 3-4 hours per night because as a heart surgeon he went days without sleep and his body adjusted to needing less sleep.
In time you will get to that wonderful place where I am, easily falling to sleep, staying asleep. It just takes time to get there but you now have a huge shortfall of peace you need to deal with. Lighten up!
My approach is the best insomnia answer because it takes the least time: i don't need to spend 30 minutes working out, etc. I just fall right to sleep because I think like a little kid a lot and have a good time (even when I'm sober :). I would not have time for these other regimins like doing so and so . Way too complicated and boring.
