Get the MS Office "Student and Teacher" edition. It's cheap and almost everyone qualifies.

If what you need is a word processor and not an office suit, try Abiword. Unlike Writer from Open Office, Abiword includes a spell checker and a grammar checker. It also supports many features present in Writer and Word, including styles. It's low system requirements are another plus, especially if your computer is a laptop. You can share files with Word users, and it's free.

You will have to purchase. If you only want Word, I suggest you go directly to Microsoft. Be careful of pirated copies. You will not be able to get updates and fixes.

Also, in my area, the Sunday paper contains ads from several computer stores -- Office Max, Office Depot, CompUSA ...
they are selling the student version of Office 2003 (which contains Word and Excel) -- best last price I saw was $119.

Why get ripped off by MicroShaft for Word

Get Open Office, it does exactly the same as MS Office, recognises a hell of a lot more companies document formats, and is FREE
