...go poo? He usually goes about twice a day, but hasn't gone for 2 days, except for one small nugget. Is there anything I can before taking him to the vet?

I put out some butter and he ate it. He's gone a couple of times, but not as much as usual (he's a biiiig cat). Gonna monitor him for a while longer and see how it goes.
Thank-you all for the suggestions.

Hi there...consider using canned pumpkin. The fibre helps regulate the cat or sprinkling a pinch of Metamucil (to learn more how it helps pet animals: http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=0&cat=1459&articleid=1473).
Constipation is indicative that something may be medically wrong therefore a vet visit should be considered to rule out any possibilities that could be harmful or life threatening.

It takes moisture and fat to keep the bowels working smoothly so some butter is great (cats usually like this), olive oil or oil from a tuna can (just this once) can get things greased up.
Chronic constipation is a serious issue and if you do see a vet he may be suggesting a diet change of some sort. You have to use straight canned pumpkin if you choose to go that route -- not pie filling as it has sugar and spices not particularly good for a cat. You can also cook up some winter squash and see which your cat might like. If you open a can or cook some up freeze the excess in an ice cube tray, then transfer to a plastic bag. That way it's no trouble to thaw one out for his "laxative". It's actually a food and not the kind of stimulant laxatives that people get addicted to.

Put a tiny bit of mineral oil on his food. As long as he is urintaing he will be ok until you can take him to the vets without doing an emergency visit. If he is not urinating he needs to be taken to a vet ASAP he could be blocked which happens a lot with male cats.

Don't bother if he's not showing any signs of uneasiness and is his usual self. Take a small pot of gravel and keep it in some corner of a room where you want him to poo, once you can make him sit there after his lunch and he'll get the idea. Then you'll have to change the gravel every 2-3 days so it doesn't smell

Try putting a little vegetable or mineral oil either on his dry food or mix it up with his canned food.
Our vet once recommeded putting a small portion of butter on a plate or in a bowl and letting them lick that up. I thought it sounded nuts, but it really did work in just a matter of hours......also doesn't hurt that the cat it was used on would eat anything....LOL

Are you feeding him wet or dry food? He's probably okay, and will make up for lost time, but it's great to hear about someone who cares so much about their pet. I have cats myself, and they're like my kids.
Good luck, and take him to the vet in a couple days if he still doesn't go.

Put a little mineral oil in his food, maybe a teaspoonful. It might cause diahrrea, but you won't have a poo-less cat anymore.

Try sprinkling a little catnip in the litter box. It will at least attract him to the litter. If he continues to not do anything I would take him to a vet.
