While in the U.S. Army {1964-1966} I was in the field artillery assigned to an 8" howitzer battalion. I was wondering if they are still being used, if not when did they go away?

No, I was one of the last Operators of the M110A2 Howitzer, it was totaly removed from the US inventory in 1993/94. Its replacement is the MLRS (Multiple launch Rocket System.) All National Guard and reserve units have completed transition to either 155MM How or the MLRS, however, they are in the inventory with other countries. Korea still uses them.

The howitzer was released of service in the late eighties when more advanced technology was discovered. They were too slow and bulky to transport over more desert-like terrain. In place of the howitzer now is a vehicle that can launch eight rockets from its bedplates at almost any given angle.

Appearently they have been totally replaced by the 155mm (6-inch) with longer range ammo, and the barrels of the old guns were converted to bunker-buster bombs.

Musta been fun to fire those bad boys!

Vietnam gear is still used by national guard units and select marine units, but in general it has been mothballed and put away in crates.
