Not everyone, many.

Why do so many believe this?

Because diet and exercise sound hard or even undo-able, and slow;

because there are a lot of voices saying "lose 97,000 lbs in two weeks without diet or exercise" everywhere you turn;

because when you combine strong desire with being ill-informed, you can believe anything.

Now, wanna hear how to earn millions a week with only a few hours of your time?

;-)

Because of capitalism. There is, unfortunately, no law regarding disinformation in advertising. You can spend 29 seconds of a commerical talking about the wonders of some pill and a fraction of a second (or flash of size 2 type) saying "along with diet and exercise". I lost over 100 lbs, never once touching a stupid pill, and people are always disappointed when I tell them it took over a year. You do, however, omit discipline from your list. You need that to keep the weight off and push through the tough times when you're stuck at a plateau. I knew a lady who got gastric who lost almost no weight because she still ate fast food all the time. Rather than all at once, she would snack on a Big Mac and fries all day. Then she would complain. Pathetic

Because we live in America, where we expect everything to be easy and convinient. The only way to drop pounds is to stay healthy ( excersise), and eating certain foods that are right for you. Lettuce and water dosen't work for everyone.

People always believed that there is a shortcut or easy way for everything. It is programmed on most of our kind. That's something we have to deal with.
