I have a Cobra CB installed in a Jeep Wrangler. Given that the antenna is installed correctly, how can I improve reception? I am able to communicate, but with no distance at all.

Given that the antenna is NOT installed correctly or you should be able to "get out" at least 3 to 5 miles, lets go to step one. All legal CB's (by FCC law) can only have 5 watts input to the final. That generally equates to something a tad less at the antenna. I set all motorcycle CB's to exactly 3.7 watts out (in to my Sencore analyzer) at 75% modulation. One reason for the slightly lower out put is that they are small in size, generally mounted in a plastic ferring and can't dissipate heat very well.
They also have a lousy ground plane and make it hard to put an effective antenna on them. You should run an VSWR check on your instillation and, on a jeep, you are some what limited where you can even mount an antenna. The military use to mount them on a ball joint type mount, using one heck of a long whip. With today's higher frequency's that are used, now the antennas are just mounted on top of the radio stack in the back of the jeep, Hummer, or what ever. Several of my friends mounted their antennas ( K40's or Wilson's ) on the hood of their jeeps. Those that have the "roll bars" mount them there. In that case you can get away with a 3' top load "stick" antenna. A base load on a jeep sucks (except re hood mount as above) do lack of good ground plane and lousy polar pattern.

What do you consider distance? A CB is not intended to be a long range device even though it can be under the right conditions such as skip. Even if the antenna is installed correctly you might have other problems. Was the antenna match tested with a SWR meter? If not, it should be. You could have a bad connection to the antenna or a problem in the CB receive circuitry. You can get the sensitivity tested at a shop to determine if there is a problem with the CB.

There is no legal way to boost a CB signal. Some people use linear amplifiers to increase the output, but it is not legal.
