In the early 1500s, a German monk named Martin Luther was so conscious of his sins that he spent up to six hours in the confessional. Through study of the Scriptures he found that salvation didn't come through anything he did, but simply through trusting in the finished work of the cross of Jesus Christ. He listed the contradictions between what the Scriptures said and what his church taught, and nailed his "95 Theses" to the church door in Wittenberg, Germany. Martin Luther became the first to "protest" against the Roman Church, and thus he became the father of the Protestestant Church. Since that split, there have been many disagreements about how much water one should baptize with, how to sing what and why, who should govern who, etc., causing thousands of splinter groups. Many of these groups are convinced that they alon are right. These have become know as Protestant "denominations." Despite the conclustion, these churches subsribe to certain foundational beliefs such as the deity, death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The bible says, "The foundation fo God stands sure, having this seal, the Lord knows them that are his" (2 Timothy 2:19)
There are so many churches because there are so many different denominations,

That's like asking,"WHY ARE THERE SO MANY KINDS OF CARS?" Everybody has an opinion on how things should be. Period. It started with the Greeks in about 1100 CE, when they felt the priests had the right to marry women. Then Calvin, and Martin Luther, in about 1300 CE, said that the congregation had the right to read The Word and study on their own. And if THAT wasn't enough, HENRY VIII had to put HIS 2 cents worth in it, and declare he had the right to DIVORCE (and I think he even BEHEADED some) of his wives! And HE started what is NOW, the Episcopal Church. I hope this helped.

They could build bars where people get drunk, drive, and kill a few innocent victims on the way home. I prefer a church that supports missionaries who provide the needy with food, water, clothing, shelter, and education.

It disappoints me. With so much intellect in that head of yours, I wonder what it could accomplish if it didn't bash other groups of people?

You can try. Go ahead. God WILL win, maybe He will not win you, but He tries until the last day of yours.
