IM NOT A CHRISTIAN DAMMIT!
I'm an atheist curious as to what attracts people to Satanism. To me, it seems sort of like Buddhism in that it is a philosophy invented by some guy. In the case of Satanism, LeVay came up with it. But why believe what he wrote? He's just another guy like anyone else?
Let me give an analogy. I looooove Bertrand Russell. But I don't simply accept what he said. I disagree with much of it. But if he wrote a creed of life of some kind (which he sort of did with his ramblings about what he considers the 'good life'), I would reject it just like any other such creeds, since creeds are intrinsically bad as far as I'm concerned.
Thoughts?

For me Satanism is not too compelling, but I look great in red so who knows?
My fave quote of Russells that I agree without a doubt...
"The time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time"

It's a way for people to escape reality by slavish following the late Anton LaVey. These types say they worship "themselves" but if they were really doing that, they would drop the Satanism label so people would take them seriously in life. So I see your confusion on the subject, and you are right about that. Why take on a label that will immediately alienate you? Obviously some people really want to be alienated, even if they don't admit it at first.
Then there the sociopathic types who become Satanists because they have mental problems...and sometimes the line gets a little blurry there. LaVey is supposedly one of the "normal" Satanists, but he did things people would find criminal (pandering, wife beating, cannibalism on at least one aoccasion).
It's for shock value. Could there be any other real reason? They certainly can cast spells that work. If they could would Anton LaVey have died bankrupt?

Satanism appeals to a certain type of people for much the same reason that atheism does. It offers freedom from guilt and personal responsibility. The only rule of Satanism is "Do as thou wilt and that shall be the whole of the law." Some (though by no means all) Satanists also believe that worshipping Satan will grant them supernatural powers--a powerful motive if you believe in that sort of thing.
Fortunately, most atheists I know (including myself) don't actually subscribe to this type of philosophy. However, I have known a number of Satanists who justified their every action, no matter how evil, with this system of belief.

Well, we feel exactly the same as you do about Bertrand Russell. We don't worship Anton LaVey or take everything he ever said as "gospel" There are certainly things and ideas he had that I disagree with, but yes, as you said, he is just a person. I'm sure he would've disagreed with some things I may say.
Satanism is simply a hedonistic way of life. Living life in pursuit of pleasure, truth, and justice. Mixed with a little ritual to spice things up. It's just basically atheism/agnosticism crossed with a carnival. You dig?
Feel free to email me if I can help you to understand more.

As another nonchristian, I think many people are attracted to Satanism because they want to be non-conformist. Maybe scare mom and dad, or freak out the christians! I can't blame them in a sense, but I agree with you that life shouldn't be based on a creed written by "some guy."

read the Satanic Bible by Levay. it is written in a way that makes you feel intellegent and supreme, but at the same time tells you that you are not allowed to hurt of kill anything that you are not going to eat.
It glorifies all of the carnal desires of mankind, but vilifies all of the things that are generaly unacceptable in society. (murder, molestation, rape etc.)
it allows you to do everything that a human normally wants to do without any fear of devine retribution.

Satanism in and of itself should not be an option for athiests. On the other hand, for that that believe in the specters of religion, chosing the evil over the good is just another choice.
