It could be traced up with Peter and Paul Scriptural directives about hair of the men in which was implemented by the christian clergy from the early perion of christianity..
The clean-shaven, short, cropped hair was a style that began way back in 297 B.C. set by the Roman emperors and the Romans took their clean-shaven look very seriously.
Romans who were stricly christian could have followed Jesus for being clean-shaven.The popular image of Jesus with long hair and beard only came into being through artistic representations around the time of the Renaissance; the earliest images of Christ, such as those found in the catacombs, always show Him with short hair and clean shaven.
Such could also had strong impact on christian clergy being clean-shaven.

The overwhelming majority of Christian clergy throughout the world have beards, and always have.

You may be looking at megachurch evangelicals, but they represent a small minority of Christians. They are part of the ignorant, conservative sector of American society in which beards are associated with liberal thinking, so they stay clean shaven to keep from upsetting your grandmother.

But if you get out and explore, you will see more clergy with beards than without. For sure.

That's a weird Q...people are clean shaven or not because of the times. In the 50's a beard or mustache would be odd,but not in the late 60s and 70s.Check out the Greek and Russia Orthodox they usually have whiskers.

Hmmm, that's a good question. I think, because there is no hard and fast rule about a beard in the Bible that facial covering is up to the man. Since most men today are clean shaven (although I've had pastors who had a beard), I think that preachers just went along with other men in terms of their facial appearance.

So most likely it changed when society changed.

They don't have to be. My stepfather is a pastor and has had a full beard for over thirty years. Most men these days are cleanshaven; makes since that the majority of clergy would be too.

I don't have an answer for you, just speculation. Jesus came from an orthodox Jewish home so therefore he had a beard, and he died on the cross with his beard. As I've heard it, catholicism was first formed and christianity followed. and maybe that's why all pictures of Jesus have him wearing a beard. I read somewhere that Jews didn't respect men who had no beard. So maybe once the split came there was no need to follow the orthodox ways anymore.
