for play as in playing a game it is jouer
for gamble as in placing a bet it is parier

You could try gambler. But maybe you wouldn't get away with that. Best plan is to Get Google up, choose the option (in little blue letters) LANGUAGE TOOLS. Type to gamble in the box., then select from the menus, translate English to French.
Cripes! I could have done it myself in about a quarter of the time that it has taken to type this.
I did: the answer is au jeu
but please note, this is not a verb in French but a predicate. Enjoy.

To gamble=
Jouer .... also means "to play"...
Parier.... really means "to bet"..
The real and exact translation is ...= gager....which also means 'to bet'...
Than again...it also depends on the context...
like for example...:
Don't gamble with love... or with life... would use the verb "jouer"
Also... French Canadians will also use the verb "gambler"...in their average speach....lol..., but it is not an actual french verb, only the usage is very common....lol...

i'm not sure if there's a translation for the verb "gamble", but i would use "jouer" as in "to play".
i guess gambling is like playing, no?
