It's really only used in a literary sense... probably because crows and ravens have always been associated with death and doom.

It's probly because there dark birds who tend to be forigers...
I gueese-Ravens and crows are a sybmol of darkess, so mabey int he olden days they thohgt they would turn itno sometihng visus and eat you(jsut my thought)
