I belong to a local quilt guild and we make charity quilts to donate to shelters for their guests' use as well as to organizations to raffle off to raise money. If you don't want to join a group, you can make lap robes (crocheted, knitted or quilted) and donate them to a retirement facility.
If you're not crafty, you can get others in your community to donate clothing, household supplies, etc. to a local battered women's shelter or a thrift store that raises funds for a woman's or an animal shelter, etc.
Donate your time and help out at a local shelter or a nursing home. Many of the nursing homes have elderly folks who would love to have someone to talk to, read books out loud for the blind or write letters for them to send to relatives who live out of town or in another state.
Volunteer at a local zoo or museum. They can always use the help!
Walk down your road with a garbage bag and pick up litter. Be sure to wear gloves so you don't cut yourself! Don't wait for someone to ask or notice what you're doing...do it to make you feel like you're contributing...
There are plenty of opportunities out there: just look around!

Contact your state capitol.
They have a lot of things you can do there and also in your own home town that would assiat in your local government.
I use to do canvasing for a candidate, who was running for governor, when I was a teen.
It was a BLAST! There were several of us and I met a bunch of new friends in the process.
You can also be a page. A teen that runs small errands around the capitol building. Delivering paperwork, mostly.
Just call and ask. They'll tell you over the phone and also mail you some literature too on the different volunteer work you can do.
Good luck and have fun!

Join your local fire/ambulance company. You can be a volunteer firefighter, or EMT. That's not the only thing you can do there, you can help Ladies Axillary. They usually help with dinners, dances, and when there's a fire call they help bring food and water to the emergency personnel. You could also help with fund raising, etc. I choose firefighting, and I love it. Any non-profit organization can always use help, I like the idea to find one of the less mentioned organizations, because they may especially need your help.

ask people if they know any help centers that don't get allot of attention , which in turn they usually cant find help they need and help them out. i know many helps centers that need that kind of help. sometimes a simple word of mouth at the same time as working for them can help get attention to their causes. the big centers like united way, salvation army, red cross and all get allot of attention, while the little guys don't. you could also volunteer to babysit for free while parents are going to start Christmas shopping. or if you go to church volunteer to watch kids so people can go to a bible study. get some others girls together to watch more kids to allow groups of parents to have a break or a get together of their own. sometimes the littlest help can make a big differance.

The Elderly can be fun to be around too--check with Churches or into nursing homes!
How about coaching a little kids sports team like softball or soccer!???
and if nothing else sounds good how about an important thing to do--support the troops and join the uso or the organization 'support the troops ' sending e-mails and letter and packages to our service people in harms way!

Why don't you volunteer to help out in a nursing home. There are a lot of lonely people there.

Special Olympics, for me. It's a good idea to pick something related to your interests or career. That way, you stay positive and interested. And it can keep you well-rounded professionally. (Looks good on a resume, too.)
