You'll just have to tell him. There's no easy way, the sooner the better.

Being truthful is the best decision. Explain it with great remorse and concern, But...
Pick a time when your Dad is in a good mood.
Assert whether his overall view of you is as a responsible son or irresponsible son. If he See's you as responsible then he is more likely to understand. If irresponsible then his mind is already made up to blow his top off.
Situational Awareness is the key to deciding if you should tell him or not. Either way he's likely to find out sometime and if he sees that you withheld it from him, (lied) then he will blow his top.
I would first trace every move I made when I lost it and ask everyone involved about it. Take some time to do some detective work. Also try to find out the serial number of the unit for identification proposes. Check with the lost and found dept's of any establishment that you may have lost it in.
Good Luck

The best thing to do is tell him it got stolen. Come up with a good way that it could get stolen like you set it down in the restroom at school to wash your hands or something like that. Act very upset and tell him you are sorry.
He may give you grief for being irresponsible but he will get over it.
But if you don't want to lie that much just tell him the truth.
Tell him that you lost it last month and you just couldn't get the courage to let him know. I think honesty is the best policy in this situation but if he is going to go crazy and overreact then I would tell him it got stolen yesterday and you didn't see who did it.

Look, I'm a mum of 4 and all I ever asked is that my kids are honest with me, he may be a little upset but on the positive side, he might be able to claim on his insurance, try and tell him, let him know you are sorry etc;

I would forget the lost part because then you're the at fault. Say it got stolen.

you could lie and say someone stole it. OR you could and should just tell the truth and apologize. Sooner is better, the longer you wait the harder it will be.
