If your school's debate and speech team is like most teams that compete against other schools, you'll find that your competitions will take place over the weekends. So perhaps instead of wondering whether you want to spend three hours on your first meeting, you should consider whether you want to commit the time necessary to prepare and compete in the long run.

From my own experience, speech and debate was a wonderful activity, and well worth the time I put into it. (In fact, I continue to work as a debate coach in my free time!) Beyond adding an attractive entry in college applications, speech and debate offer public speaking skills and critical thinking skills that you're not likely to develop as well in the regular high school curriculum. The people that participate in speech and debate usually share many of the same interests, so you could meet new people on your team as well as from other schools.

But to answer your question more directly: If you're not absolutely positive you want to join the team, but you think it might be fun, you should probably go to the first meeting. That will allow you to make a better choice about whether you want to join the team rather than deciding not to get involved because it will occupy some of your Saturdays.

I would...you're going to meet new people and you're allowed to argue with them! Plus, like the other guy said...it looks great on your college application.
