You tell your child, "That was not an okay thing to say! You wouldn't like it if someone said that to you, would you? You need to apologize otherwise you WILL be punished."

Every parent has had a moment like this....
Give the person one of those "Sh*t sorry" looks.
Then have a quiet talk to your child about not always speaking his or her mind...
Kids say some totally wrong things sometimes, It is because they don't have their social tact perfected yet.
As adults, we know that we probably should not say that things that pop into our heads!!
But children haven't got a full idea that statements that they think are just observations for example, could be hurtful, or rude.
I once told a rather solemn friend of my parents that he had the biggest nose I had ever seen! My parents were suitably embarrassed, but their friend had children himself, so I think he understood!

What did this "stranger" do or say to provoke the child's response? Something must have occured that you didn't notice. Ask the child why he/she reacted that way and you maybe one step closer to finding out what happened. It may have perfectly innocent or something else. In this current climate of stranger-danger we as parents cannot be complacent when it comes to approaches from unfamiliar persons, no matter how innocent it may be.

Try to find out why he believes what he says to be true, and also why he believes it's ok for him to say it. For in so doing you will know better which way to help him see things from a different point of view. [replace her for him, if it's a girl]

For one thing, it all depends on how old the child is. Does he understand what he said? Explain to him, what he said, was not approperate, and why.
