There isnt realy an average price. The square footage of the home determins the A/C's size, and putting in the duct work if none exists can cost as much and even more than having the main unit installed.
Besthing you caqn do is get at least three estimates, sometimes even more if you live in a high priced area.

If you duct work is up to snuff the unit will cost $1500-2500 and installation about $1000. This is assuming you can get by with a 10ton unit.

Depends on how your house is insulated. In texas, where I live, a typical small to regular older house will run from 4500 - 6000. And that includes heat and air.

Do you have adaquat ductwork. (Forced hot air furnace.) It will be considerably cheaper. Single story 1400 sq ft no sun rooms or other large heat sources. 3 ton unit installed with existing ductwork. $4000.

IT ALL DEPENDS ON 1] DO YOU HAVE FORCED HOT AIR SYSTEM NOW ;WITH THE DUCT WORK ALL IN AND ; 2] DO YOU HAVE GOOD INSULATION. OTHER WISE FORGET IT;IT WILL COST TOO MUCH.
