First a cartoon and now riots over the pope's quote. Westerners deliberately criticize their own religion, politics and social behavior hundreds of times daily. Yet, if anything comes close to offending Isalm, the entire Muslim world freaks out. Why?

You are assuming that it is okay to deliberately criticize things that are not understood by the critic...it is not. As a westerner, I know that many people do this; but not all of us. Among ourselves, we get in hot water doing this because it is also a practice that results in irrational suspicion, hatred and stereotyping; which is exactly what you are doing with the question you have.
Please consider the activity of man bashing. People jokingly talk about how men do not get it, they are immature, etc. I take offense to this because my dad and my brothers are incredible men, husbands and fathers. Once a woman my brother was dating tried to make a steretypical "man" joke about my brother and I confronted her and told her her joke was thoughtless and not applicable to my brother.
I am a Christian and I get very upset when someone who is not understanding my particular religion (Catholicism) says things that are not true or suggests that because warped pedophiles entered the priesthood, we are all perverts. I hate what these sick predators did. That does not mean I am personally a pedophile or even condone their actions. It angers me that people would use the behavior of these people , insult me by implying I endorse this and then suggest that I am angry all the time because I find the suggestion offensive and protest it. I really hope you give some serious thought to this statement you made.

Anger is easier than being thoughtful and having an intelligent discussion about views of one's religion. Islam has been stolen by a bunch of "red neck back woods hillbillies" who are afraid their religion is so weak it can not survive in the 21st century. Until Moderate Muslims get their back bones up and begin a jihad against the jihadist, Muslims will be under some ones gun sights.

They're not. They were angry at the cartoon because it was very insulting to their religion, and they believe you should not use an image of Mohammed, which the cartoons did. They don't all freak out. I know where you get that idea, it's because the news shows you watch don't want to tell you all the good events that are taking place. They only tell you bad news (no duh). They're not about to tell you how some kid in Misissippi sold lemonade. They tell you the big stuff, the negative stuff. You need to do some research!

Perhaps it is due to the fact that they are recently on the receiving end of an awful lot of violence coming from the West, in the form of missiles, bombs, tanks, and those who would exploit them for personal gain. If your village was blown up you might find yourself becoming a little testy as well.

I don't agree with you entirely, but it does seem that the Muslim religion is not as welcoming as many of the other major religions including Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity, and Judaism.

Low self-esteem. They figure that if they yell loud enough and cut off enough heads people will respect them.
That's only true of the port-side PC crowd. They (PC) feel sorry for Muslims. But in reality, they (Muslim protesters) are worried about their manhood.
