Which 1.4 are you talking about? The petrol or the TDCi(diesel)? The ads of the Fiesta, that states the diesel attains an incredible fuel-efficiency of 31.48 kmpl and the petrol 1.4 getting a 22.43 kmpl and not company's claims. The figures were achieved by Autocar India, an automobile magazine, in thier Max Mileage Marathon.
To get these figures, the two fiestas were filled full tank and made to run a banked, circular track at VRDE( Vehicle Researh & Development Establishment). The vehicles were running at a constant speed of 60kmph in top gear while the engine was running at 1800rpm. Each car would be driven for 3 hours by a driver before another one takes over the wheel. Their aim was to see how much a car can run on a full tank of fuel?
The real fact is that almost all modern cars are capable of giving staggering fuel economy figures if driven like that. The road conditions however do not permit us to drive at constant speed(60kmph), either you have to brake or accelerate. Also there is no infrastructure to do so. Theoretically speaking, to accelerate to double the speed(say from 40kmph to 80kmph), the engine has to deliver about 4 times the power it was delivering at that speed(40kmph). This power comes from the fuel ofcourse. Let me conclude before you get bored. Hope I'm clear. Do write in if you have any more queries.

company ad claims are all tested in a controlled lab environment. Real world driving sometimes varies greatly from the claimed fuel economy. The company claims should only be used as a comparison guide to other car companies claims of fuel economy. As for the performance of the car it would best to test drive the car and other cars in the same performance category to determine if the fiesta best suits your needs

On the other hand..... my son became UK Ford Fiesta Champion using the 1.4 Zetec version. On a track like Thruxton the datalogger indicated he was on full throttle for 97% of the time on track and achieved 9 miles per gallon!

Yes it is but wow is it cramped. I would not like to get in a small fender bender with it. It also has crappy highway manners. Usually shutters at speeds over 55. But fuel efficient it is!
