To Juley-Please try not to tell me what I meant in your ignorance of not knowing there are millions of Muslims in India. I happen to know the difference between Pakistan and India.

Hi,
According to the official government website- Census of India, (http://www.censusindia.net/ ) the number of muslims residing in India as per the year 1991 census, was 101,596,057.
This figure contributed to the 12.12% of the total Indian population back then in 1999 (according to the site).
Now, for some comparative data, I have with myself the Manorama Yearbook 2006- one of the best general knowledge updates available in India.
Here are the figures for comparision-
In 1961,
Muslim population was 46.9 millions which was 10.7% of the total population.
In 1971,
Muslim population was 61.4 millions which was 11.2% of the total population.
In 1981,
Muslim population was 75.6 millions which was 11.4% of the total population.
In 1991,
Muslim population was 95.2 millions which was 11.67% of the total population.
The results of the census held in 2001 are not available either on the site or the yearbook but, I guess they are easy to predict on the basis of the pattern of growth rate you see here.
The total population of India as per the 2001 census is 1,027,015,247 (whoa!!). So, I guess the muslim population which would be around 12% of the total population i.e approximately 123 million... but hey! I am no demographist.
Note:
The slight difference between the data in the 1999 census site and that in the yearbook is because of the various other sources consulted by the yearbook people.

Pakistan and Bangladesh were partitioned from India, but there are still loads and loads of Indian Muslims. Theyare a minority, but when you consider that India has a population of over a billion, India is the number 2 Islamic country (I think).

Not many I presume. They are mostly Hindu. I think it's Pakistan you're thinking of.
